This article reviews the scientific findings of a national panel of experts put together by the National Institutes of Health in 1997 to examine what constitutes effective medical treatment for opiate addiction. The interdisciplinary panel, comprised more than 25 scientific leaders from the fields of medicine, psychology, psychiatry and public health, reviewed results of numerous published studies in the health care literature and presented the data at a conference of 600 providers and patients to give them a clear picture of the most effective methods for the treatment of opiate dependence. Findings reported were written up in a consensus statement that covers the natural history, genetics, risk factors and pathophysiology associated with the diagnostic label of opiate dependency.
